SUSTAINABLE STORY TIME

Gather at 11 AM and 12 PM to enjoy a kid's story time presented by Barnes & Noble. Enjoy animated readings of children's books with a focus on the environment, sustainability, food, and the planet!

KIDS EXPLORE CORNER

Spread out in the park and learn about nature and sustainability in a Uni Project reading corner outfitted with an Explore Cart full of books, coloring pages, and science equipment. Kids can be scientists for the day, using magnifying glasses and microscopes to explore and understand nature specimens.

SMOOTHIE BIKE

Hop on the Sweetcycle smoothie bike for a sweet, sustainable treat! Learn how to reduce food waste by creating smoothies and other recipes from food scraps or produce that would otherwise be wasted. Smoothies will be made using rescued strawberries and bananas from Whole Foods Market.

HERB GARDENING

Grow your food at home and learn the art of local farming. Plant herbs donated by GrowNYC from the Union Square Greenmarket to take and grow at home, and learn recipes that use your own herbs and local, seasonal ingredients (that you can shop for at the Greenmarket).

GO ZERO WASTE

Learn how to reduce your waste footprint with NYC's Department of Sanitation. Pick up stickers and decals that will help you keep garbage out of landfills by properly recycling and composting trash, plus receive a free DSNY reusable bag. Kids will love their bookmarks and sustainability coloring and comic books!

FACE PAINTING

Get decked out with face painting happening throughout the entire event. Kids are encouraged to get designs of their favorite flowers, trees, fruits and veggies, or any other designs in celebration of Union Square Park.

COMPOSTING DEMO

Learn the science of composting with the LES Ecology Center. Experience how food is composted, learn how to compost at home, and see where to drop off food scraps in Union Square Park.

SUCCULENT PLANTING

Reduce, reuse, and recycle! Turn empty moisturizer jars from Innisfree into pots for your succulent plant, and learn about other ways you can repurpose used beauty supplies. While you garden, learn about Innisfree's sustainable philosophies, including naturally derived ingredients, their in-store green wall, and new biodegradable sheet masks.

ROCK PAINTING

Connect with nature through arts and crafts. Kids can get creative and paint colorful designs onto rocks, which they can take home, use to play games, or leave in the park as part of a special Union Square Park rock garden.

REFRESHMENTS

Refuel throughout the day with refreshments from Pret A Manger. While you sip, talk with their team to learn more about their sustainability initiatives, such as their reusable cup discount and commitment towards making all packaging 100% recyclable.

Meet USP's seasonal Playground Associate, who will be on-site at Evelyn's Playground on select days throughout the summer providing crafts and activities for kids of all ages to enjoy!

Grab a rake and get to work! Help us keep Union Square Park clean, bright and beautiful with Partnership for Parks. Sign up below to volunteer on It's My Park! Day, assisting with projects such as raking leaves and mulch, weeding, and trash pick-up through the park's lawns, walkways, and plantings,
